The SGPC, or Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, is a religious organization responsible for the management and administration of gurdwaras (Sikh temples) in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh, as well as several other states in India. The SGPC is often referred to as the “mini-parliament of Sikhs” and plays a crucial role in the preservation and promotion of Sikhism.
The SGPC was established in 1920, following the Gurdwara Reform Movement, which aimed to remove corrupt priests and managers from the control of Sikh gurdwaras. The committee oversees the management of significant gurdwaras, including the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar, and is also involved in educational, religious, and cultural activities to promote Sikh values and teachings.
The SGPC is also responsible for the publication of religious texts, organizing religious events, and managing charitable institutions. It operates under the Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925, which provides the legal framework for its functioning.
