About Us
Guru Nanak Khalsa College of Arts, Science, and Commerce, operated by the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. Established in 1937, this college is located in a serene yet central part of the city, offering a peaceful and conducive environment for academic pursuits. The college is permanently affiliated with the University of Mumbai and has been recognized by the UGC since 1974. It operates under a grant-in-aid financial status.
The inception of G. N. Khalsa College can be traced back to Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, who proposed the idea of establishing a higher education institute in Bombay to Sikh leaders in Amritsar in 1935. The Sikh leaders embraced this idea with the dual goal of providing quality education and promoting Sikh culture in a non-Sikh state. The college was established on a 27,642 square yard plot, where it stands today, as a testament to this vision.
Over the decades, G. N. Khalsa College has produced numerous distinguished individuals across various fields, including academia, politics, and sports. Notable alumni include Shri Ram Joshi, a former Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai University, and several Olympians, Arjuna Awardees, and Padma Shri recipients such as S.S. Narayan (Football), Mary Leela Rao (Athletics), and Lorraine Fernandes (Hockey). The college has contributed significantly to India’s representation in sports at the Olympics, particularly in hockey.
As the college entered the 21st century, it expanded to accommodate over 6,000 students, supported by a dedicated faculty of 200 and more than 150 administrative staff. Despite being a minority institution, G. N. Khalsa College embodies the Sikh philosophy of the oneness of humanity, maintaining a cosmopolitan and secular environment. It upholds its commitment to promoting Sikh culture through Punjabi and Divinity classes, as well as through traditional practices like the Akhand Path’ followed by Langar,’ which fosters a sense of community and inclusivity.
G.N. Khalsa College remains a vibrant and multicultural microcosm of Indian society, continuing its legacy of academic excellence and cultural preservation.
