About the Department
Department of Botany was established in 1937 with undergraduate course and eventually Post-graduate, and PhD courses also started.
- The department has long standing legacy of academic excellence and research growth which is supported by highly qualified staff and robust infrastructure including well equipped and spacious UG and PG laboratories along with a dedicated Plant Tissue Culture laboratory.
- Faculty includes 5 permanent and 4 contractual teaching staff and 4 dedicated non-teaching staff.
- Training programs aimed at skill development and practical learning are regularly offered.
- Department offers consultancy services for herbal material authentication services to support academic institutions, researchers, and herbal drug companies.
- To promote conservation practices, a rich collection of medicinal and ornamental plants is maintained.
- To provide a platform to students to showcase academic and cultural talent, departmental fest ‘Gloriosa’ is celebrated annually.
Department Highlights:
Research Programs: The department has a well-established research culture, offering research programs at UG, PG and Doctoral levels. To support research projects/activities, the department has high-end instruments; Spectrophotometer, Soxhlet apparatus, Rotary vacuum evaporator, Plant Tissue Culture facilities, and 4 Mumbai University recognized research guides with 10 PhD students registered.
Grants received: The department has received prominent research grants such as STAR, FIST, RUSA and DST. 4 permanent teachers have been the recipients of research grants offered by UGC, Mumbai University and Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission, Govt. of Maharashtra.
Internship Programs: Under NEP 2020, OJT and internship programs for UG and PG students have been initiated to bridge the gap between academic and industrial training. Our students have completed these programs at Blooming Story India, Tree EcoTech-Arboriculture solutions, and Indoor Green companies.
Our students are also well placed in educational and pharma sector, agro-companies, horticulture consultancy etc.
Certificate and Credit courses: To provide hands-on experience and practical skills, various certificate courses on Plant Molecular techniques, Bioinformatics, and Basics techniques in Plant Tissue Culture are offered on regular basis.
Industrial and Field visits: To bridge the gap between classroom learning and real practical world applications, the UG and PG students’ visit to Botanical gardens, research centers and agricultural industries are organized.
