The Department of Bioinformatics at G. N. Khalsa College, established in 2009, with the aim of providing quality education and training in the interdisciplinary field of Bioinformatics. The postgraduate program bridges academic learning with industry requirements, addressing the needs of the BioIT, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Clinical research and IT sectors.

The skill-oriented curriculum integrates biological sciences with computational methodologies and emphasizes hands-on training in the collection, analysis, interpretation, and management of high-throughput biological data. Experienced and qualified faculty from both academia and industry conduct lectures and practical’s, actively engaging in teaching, research, and academic mentoring. Students gain exposure by receiving hands-on training on to genomics, proteomics and analytical instruments such as HPLC and LC-MS at the National Facility for Biopharmaceuticals, enhancing technical competence and research skills.

The department promotes holistic development of students by participating in seminars, workshops, conferences, and research conventions such as Avishkar (University of Mumbai), OMICS Symposium by IIT-B, eminent scientist interaction from ICMR-NIRRH, ACTREC.

To nurture leadership and organizational skills, student-led activities like the inter-collegiate fest BION, organized by students for students, are regularly hosted. The department is also a Nodal Centre for conducting workshops and training under the IIT Bombay Virtual Lab initiative. With modern laboratories, ICT-enabled classrooms, industry visits, on-the-job training, and a mandatory three-month dissertation project, the department ensures strong industry readiness and employability.
