About the Department
Founded in 1937 alongside our prestigious institution, the Department of Chemistry stands as the largest department, serving over 250 students annually across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. It features well-maintained laboratories and robust research infrastructure to support academic excellence.
Academic Programs
The department delivers UG and PG courses in Chemistry, with NEP 2020 implementation from the 2023-2024 academic year, including updated syllabi aligned with its flexible, skill- focused framework. PG specializations encompass Physical, Inorganic, Organic, and Analytical Chemistry, while the program holds University of Mumbai recognition for PhD research.
Faculty and Research
Student Achievements and Activities
Students showcase their research at national and international conferences, earning awards for outstanding contributions. The department promotes holistic growth through the annual ‘Chemistry Day’ fest, featuring invited talks by eminent scientists, student presentations on chemical advances, and poster competitions.
Department Highlights:
Established in 1937 alongside the founding of the institution, the Department of Chemistry is one of the largest and most vibrant departments, offering comprehensive programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.
The department pioneered postgraduate education in Inorganic Chemistry in 1952, subsequently expanding to include postgraduate courses in Organic and Physical Chemistry from 1976 onwards. Currently, the department comprises 9 permanent faculty members, with 3 being proud alumni of the college, alongside 2 contractual lecturers and 18 dedicated non-teaching staff. Our academic and research activities are supported by five well-equipped laboratories and an ICT-enabled classroom spanning over 2000 square meters.
Our department has been the recipient of significant research grants such as STAR, FIST, DST, and the Women Scientist Award. State-of-the-art infrastructure includes advanced instrumentation like Flame Photometer, Spectrophotometer, Surface Area Analyzer, and Photochemical Reactor, facilitating cutting-edge research and learning.
To foster experiential learning, the department organizes industrial visits, hands-on training sessions in analytical instrumentation, and research-driven projects. Students gain exposure to the central analytical facilities at GNIRD & NFB, featuring sophisticated equipment such as HPLC, LC-MS, and HPTLC systems. The academic environment is further enriched by activities like Chemistry Day celebrations, Parent– Teacher interactions, the E-3 Lecture Series by eminent scientists, and Performance Improvement Program (PIP).
Our department takes pride in maintaining an outstanding academic record, with nearly 100% postgraduate success rates and exemplary placement outcomes for our students.
