About the Department
- The Department was established in 1937 as the Department of History and Economics and became an independent Department of History in 1964.
- The Department has been guided by eminent academicians and dedicated teachers since its inception.
- D. S. Sodhi, the first Lecturer in History, also served as the Principal of GNKC.
- C. M. Kulkarni, the first Head of the Department (1964), later served as the Head, Department of History, University of Mumbai.
- Jagjit Singh, Former HoD and served as Principal of GNKC (1982–1992) He also held the Guru Gobind Singh Endowment Chair, at University of Mumbai.
- Other former Heads of the Department include Dalip Singh (Ex-Vice Principal), Dr. R. R. Singh, Prof. Mrs. T. K. Grewal, Dr. K. S. Cheema, Dr. Rita Bhambi, and Dr. Ravinder Kaur Cheema (Vice-Principal).
- The Department is committed to the holistic development of students and follows a student-centric approach in teaching and learning.
- Faculty members are approachable and supportive, providing guidance for academic concerns and problem-solving. To ensure academic progression, the Department conducts remedial sessions for academically weaker students.
The Department offers career guidance in the field of History, supporting students in academic and professional planning.
Department Highlights:
- The department promotes undergraduate students to participate in seminars for research paper presentations.
- Students are encouraged to participate in inter-collegiate co-curricular activities, providing wider academic exposure.
- Participation in such activities helps students develop confidence, communication skills, and the ability to face an audience.
- The department organizes field visits to historical sites, museums and places of interest connected to the syllabus for experiential learning.
- The Department conducts seminars, certificate courses, and guest lectures aimed at strengthening students’ academic knowledge and skills.
- The Department has established the Sikh Heritage Museum with grants received under the College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) scheme which showcases Sikh heritage and stands as one of its kind in Mumbai.
